From Engineering News-Record. The Dept. of Labor's inbox has been swamped by more than 300,000 comments—the vast majority from construction workers, according to a top union official—weighing in on the department’s proposal to revamp the federal program for apprenticeships.
From jdsupra.com. Misclassifying workers does not violate the NLRA. The National Labor Relations Board issued a decision yesterday, ruling 3-1 that worker misclassification does not violate the National Labor Relations Act. In Velox Express, the Board found that the employer had misclassified employees as “independent contractors,” but found that the misclassification did not violate labor law. Member Lauren McFerran, the only Democrat on the Board, dissented from this part of the ruling.

From Engineering News-Recod. The politics are tangled when it comes to the Trump administration’s initial decision—which still could change—not to include construction in its proposed apprenticeship rule revision. The proposal, for which the comment period ended on Aug. 26, now leaves the industry out of a planned U.S. Labor Dept. effort to expand apprentice programs in sectors such as health care and information technology by allowing private entities to manage the registration process typically carried out by federal and state agencies.

From hrdrive.com. Let me paint you a picture. Paul, an employee at a fast food burger joint, is chatting with his neighbor about how, just in the past few months, he's struggled to keep on top of his finances. He's paid a couple bills late and his credit card debt is building up. Nothing in Paul's life has changed: he's paying the same rent in his Denver apartment, he's single and he's healthy.
